Curriculum/GCSE PE

Intent:

At Shaftesbury High School we strive to inspire our students through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term healthy lifestyles and making a positive impact on physical, mental and social health. The curriculum will encourage pupils to challenge themselves and develop effective learning behaviours such as resilience and independence. Students will become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness through a range of physically demanding sports or activities to enable them to lead a healthy active lifestyle. They will have the opportunities to succeed and excel during a high-quality curriculum and engage in competitive sports and activities. Core focus is on component knowledge of how to complete specific movements which have links across the whole curriculum.

Implementation:

Pupils will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities from the following areas: Health-Related Fitness, Invasion Games, Racket Sports, Boxing and Outdoor Adventurous Activities. This will ensure that pupils at Shaftesbury High School receive a wide and varied P.E experience. It will help develop their knowledge and understanding of the rules and how best to perform each activity. The curriculum delivery will be flexible to accommodate students prior learning and to encourage participation in unfamiliar activities. programme develops the work studied at Key Stage 3. A range of resources will support learning and assessment to promote active learning and collaboration and assessment. Interventions include smart targets for pupils that may be disengaged and allow for continuous practice in skills encouraging retention of information. Differentiation of the subject will depend on a number of factors; these factors include a learner’s prior learning and engagement. Activities and tasks will be presented to incorporate a number of different learning styles with individual activities when needed.

Impact:

Across KS3 and KS4 the impact of the curriculum will be measured through well designed and meaningful formative and summative assessments, that inform us of student progress and inform our planning. Pupils will self-reflect upon their development, reflecting upon their perceived progression each of the half term activities. The content delivered at KS4 provides students with the opportunity to gain qualifications in Sport Science. Students will understand the importance of lifelong participation and how it benefits both mental and physical health. Participating in physical activities throughout the curriculum will help to improve students overall physical fitness and well-being.
